Cruise boats

Pretty much every day we see a large cruise ship arriving or leaving - one day there were even 4 of them all in the grand canal at once! Below are some photos that attempt to show the size of them. They come in incredibly close at times and they tower above the city - I could see them from the airport when I arrived!

Their emissions are full of sulphur which is eating away at the marble throughout Venice, causing sculptures to wear away and chunks to fall off walls etc. Venice has imposed the use of a cleaner fuel which is better but still having a huge effect. Hopefully soon they will come up with a solution.

The small tugboat that guides the ships out to sea.

The decks are absolutely packed with people

Trying to give a sense of scale - you can see the small boat (not the one with the sail), which is the size of most boats around the canals.
