Arsenale highlights part 3

Joan Jonas had a video installation with two videos on opposite walls and some drawings in chalk on the walls. One of the videos showed her doing chalk drawings and erasing them etc and was quite good. Below is a still image.

I didn't like the following work at first - it looked like a bad theatre backdrop - but once I read about it I found it a lot more interesting. The artist applied latex to the last section of the Doge's Palace wall to be cleaned and this is the result. So it is ingrained with dirt and accumulations and has a complicated absence/presence and facsimile relationship with the Palace.

Sheela Gowda's installation, below, featured rope made from human hair - that's a lot of hair cuts! There are actually quite a few works made from hair (more on that later).

Richard Wentworth had a Duchampian installation of walking sticks resting on glass and mirrors. Below is a detail of the work.

Susan Hefuna was featured with a large suite of drawings - they looked thread like at first but up close you could see they are layers of tracing paper, drawn on with graphite and ink.

And lastly, Gonka Gyatso had a suite of works that combined sacred forms (such as Buddha silhouettes) with contemporary icons, such as computer on/off switches. The images are created using the visual language of puzzles, such as sudoku, crosswords and find-a-words.
