Arsenale highlights part 1

Overall the Arsenale was quite average but there were some exceptional pieces. I have to apologise in advance for some of my photos - I didn't use flash (being a good curator) so they are a bit blurry.

The first work you saw was an installation by Lygia Pape from Brazil and it made an amazing start to the exhibition. The work is constructed from gold threads arranged in square columns of different sizes and angles. It is very similar to Australia's very own Sandra Selig's work. The strands read as beams of sunlight and fade in and out of one's field of perception depending on where you stand - from each viewpoint different columns disappear from sight. It was absolutely breathtaking.

A set of works by Elena Elagina and Igor Makarevich was equally arresting. Below is an image of one work, which was a Russian eagle in metal with ice forming and then melting slightly along the bottom edges.

Spencer Finch hardly ever fails to deliver, and I really enjoyed his installation, below. The arrangement of the lights is based on a chemical construction (I can't remember which at the moment!). He also covered windows with gels so they appear to be stained glass - very subtle and most people missed it assuming it was part of the building. Unfortunately it was displayed in a room with another work and would have been best on its own.

Mike Bouchet installed this Californian house in the middle of the Arsenale. Apparently when it was first installed it sunk and they had to pump it out, which is very appropriate!

I really enjoyed Bestue/Vives video work of simple performances. Their work is like Erwin Wurm's one minute sculptures etc in a sense. They have a list of different things to do, eg 89. Cross the living room without touching the floor, 35. Hide a ninja in your hallway. Very humorous but it also has other levels. The image below is make a pyrotechnics festival with liquids, he is using all sorts of kitchen things like sauce.
